ABOUT LIYANA'S EVENT AT NJPAC - VICTORIA THEATER
February 2, 2009

I am not sure if you had a chance to see some of the band members of Liyana teaching the Newark Boys Chorus School (NBCS) the song "Never Give Up".
It was another beautiful moment in an already amazing day.

Sanaz Hojreh, Assistant Vice President, Arts in Education
New Jersey Performing Arts Center

Thank you so much... it was truly inspirational one teacher noting the eyes of a student aide welling with tears as she described the show as the best performance she had ever seen.
Children may hear the words "anything is possible," but your efforts and commitment turned those words into a bright, vivid reality for the children to see and hear.

Darren Watsky, Arts Liaison, Newark Public Schools

Speech given by Brian Rothschild, Executive Director of the John Lennon Educational Tour Bus, at the Liyana event at Rutgers University, January 29, 2009

Lesley Goldwasser, Brian Rothschild
and the members of Liyana

Good afternoon. My name is Brian Rothschild. I am the Executive Director of the John Lennon Educational Tour Bus. We are a state-of-the-art recording studio on wheels, sponsored in cooperation with Yoko Ono Lennon. The Lennon Bus has travelled around the United States and Canada providing access to music and multi-media recording to people of all ages and all walks of life. I hope some time in the future we will be parked outside of the student center so that we can collaborate with Rutgers as we have with so many schools and Universities around the country.

This year we were privileged to partner with the PG Family Foundation in NYC — and so many other donors across the region and nation — to bring Liyana to the USA for their first American Tour. The Rutgers-Newark community played an important sponsorship role in welcoming Liyana to your campus for the entire duration of their East Coast tour. I also want to extend our sincere thanks to the MCJ/Amelior Foundation for generously supporting all of Liyana New Jersey performances.

The Liyana story is pretty amazing. It's about a group of young people who taught themselves to play music, and within a short time won an international contest. But there's more. As you will see, five of them are wheel chair bound, and two others use crutches to assist with mobility. This is the other story. Despite their physical limitations, they set high goals and achieve them. The message of their life and of their music is NEVER GIVE UP!
